Research title: Mitochondria as pharmacological targets for pharmacological and toxicological evaluation of medicinal plant extracts.

Research project: Dr Augustine Ocloo is working on a research project entitled ‘Mitochondria as pharmacological targets for pharmacological and toxicological evaluation of medicinal plant extracts’ investigating whether some of the Ghana’s medicinal plants contain phytocompounds that interfere with mitochondrial function and well as examining how and to what extent the compounds interfere with mitochondrial function. The research investigates the effect of the medicinal plant extracts on mitochondria from different tissues, and screen Ghana herbal extracts for novel compounds that could serve or form the basis for developing anti-obesity and anti-ageing therapeutic agents. An anticipated output is published results and papers on the research, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience.
