Research title: Generation of Ultra Short Optical Pulses Using Graphene as Saturable Absorber.
Research project: Dr Ferdinand Katsriku is working on a research project entitled ‘generation of ultra short optical pulses using graphene as saturable absorber’ which aims to model a femtosecond laser system in which graphene is used as a nonlinear element. The simulated results are being confirmed through experimental design and setup. The purpose of the study is to explore the possibility of using the femtosecond laser system as an alternative to semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), thereby overcoming some of the limitations of SESAM based systems. An anticipated output is published results and papers on the research, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Engineering.
