Research title: Emergence of social protest movements and the strengthening of democratic governance in Uganda.

Research project: Professor Andrew Ellias State is working on a research project entitled ‘Emergence of social protest movements and the strengthening of democratic governance in Uganda’ investigating i) why and how were activists able to mobilize adherents to the persistent political protests that took place in Uganda in 2011; ii) what were repertoires of mobilization; iii) whether or not there was political realignment in the Uganda to warrant sustaining massive protest movement as witnessed, and; iv) whether protest movements in Uganda exhibited or even encountered violent confrontations and how such encounters fuelled or decreased the likelihood of participation.
