Research title: The East African Literature Bureau (EALB) and the making of modern East African Literature.

Research project: Professor Ernest Okello Ogwang is working on a research project entitled ‘The East African Literature Bureau (EALB) and the making of modern East African Literature’ which analyses the EALB as ‘colonial library’ and the 20th century emergence of modern African literature. Focusing on the EALB also broadens the scope of the study for analysis of the imperial and transnational literary transfers. Analysis of the EALB archives will especially direct attention to particular instances, actors, and enactments of colonial and postcolonial literary modernity. It illuminates some of the ways in which this involves a reworking of the civilizing mission into the imperial project of decolonization. Analysis of the EALB archives also highlights the history of the book in East Africa and for contemporary African literature.
