Genomic Epidemiology of Malaria - Wellcome Genome Campus, UK and Virtual

Conference dates: 18-20 September 2024, Apply for a bursary by 14 May 2024

A forum for understanding the clinical and biological consequences of genome variation in malaria parasites, their vectors and human hosts

We are pleased to announce the 9th Genomic Epidemiology of Malaria conference. This meeting provides a common forum for malaria scientists, clinicians, and public health professionals working at the interface of genome science and technology, epidemiology and statistical and population genetics, with an interest in understanding the clinical and biological consequences of genome variation in malaria-exposed populations. The conference will bring researchers from across the globe working on various aspects of human, parasite and mosquito genetics together with policy makers to focus on how new biological insights can be used to control malaria.

The elimination of malaria is one of the greatest challenges facing modern medical science, and has been hindered by growing levels of diagnostic and insecticide resistance, invasive vector species and the lack of a highly efficacious vaccine. Knowledge of genome variation in the host, parasite and vector populations is important to overcome these and other obstacles to malaria elimination.

The meeting will explore the genomic epidemiology of the host, vector and parasite, highlighting the practical relevance to malaria control and elimination, including impact on long-term and novel diagnostics and control measures, such as anti-malarial drug therapies, insecticide resistance and vaccines.

This interdisciplinary conference will be a hybrid meeting – with onsite or virtual attendance. The programme will also include short oral presentations from submitted abstracts, poster sessions, poster pitch talks, panel discussions and plenty of opportunities for networking at this highly interactive meeting.

PhD Studentship

KEMRI

At KEMRI-Wellcome, we are keen to build health research capacity in Kenya, East Africa and Africa. We are aware that good PhD training is the foundation for a successful professional career. As such, our PhD scheme is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to carry out their training in a high quality scientific research environment. We have established robust supervisory platforms that entail supervisory teams constituting two or three senior researchers and a student advisory committee that monitors students' progress and advises on academic, career and - if necessary, social issues that may affect students' training progress. Our supervisory system is internationally renowned and we are now an Affiliated Research Centre (ARC) of the Open University in the United Kingdom with authority to fully supervise and appraise students registered with the university.

Potential PhD projects are proposed by prospective supervisors and are mainly supported through respective supervisor funding and/or other capacity building funds at KEMRI-Wellcome. Admission to the PhD scheme is through winning a partial or full studentship in a competitive interview process. We welcome applications from all eligible candidates regardless of ethnicity, religion, age, declared disability or socio-economic background. Interested female candidates and persons living with disability are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates are appointed for a 3 months' pre-registration position during which they are assessed for their readiness and ability for registration for PhD. At the end of this period, students are formally assessed and only allowed to submit their university registration application if they pass the examination otherwise the studentship is withdrawn. Registration is subject to meeting the full requirements of the target university. At the end of the first year of registration, students undergo an upgrading assessment. This assessment determines if they will continue with the PhD training, be downgraded to an MPhil or even have their studentship withdrawn.

Partial studentships are targeted at students who are already registered for PhD in local universities and provide support for the students to spend time at KEMRI-Wellcome carrying out their research project. Normally, partial studentships run for a shorter period than full studentships.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must already have completed their Masters studies and not registered elsewhere for a PhD programme. Applicants must have scored a B+ and above in their KSCE and attained at least an upper 2nd class degree or its equivalent in the respective undergraduate degree programme.

For undergraduate degrees that are not classified, ensure your average score through the four/three years is above 60 (GPA above 3.3). Provide a certified proof of the same from your University.

SELECTION

Studentships are awarded competitively through shortlisting of online applications and subsequent interviews.

STARTING DATE

Studentships will start as soon as possible.

APPLICATION PROCESS

You can apply for two positions in one application by applying for the position you're mostly interested in (1st preference) and then specifying a 2nd preference when filling the application form. This is only applicable when there is more than one open position.

1. Click on the title of a position you're interested in to see the full description of the post.

2. A link "Submit Application" will be available at the bottom of the page.

3. Click on the submit application link and complete the resulting form. You’ll be required to first create an account and update your profile – then apply for preferred position.

PhD positions in Oslo and Århus, research in Africa, on health and/or environment, broadly conceived

Application deadline October 1st

The University of Oslo invites applications for a PhD Fellowship in the field of medical and/or environmental anthropology. In particular, we encourage projects that explore connections between changing natural environments (shaped by e.g. toxic pollution of air, water, soil or food; urbanization, industry, mining and farming; or changing vegetation and biodiversity, rainfall, and temperatures) and health challenges (e.g., epidemics of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, malnutrition, mental health and child development issues; emerging viral diseases in humans and animals; or re-emerging infectious diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness).

Examples for such human-made environment-disease constellations could be as diverse as: cancer and colonial and postcolonial agriculture; insecticides in disease control; toxicological monitoring and regulation and the registration and mapping of disease; extractive industries or air pollution; antibiotic resistance or the spread of disease vectors; animal protein production and human and non-human health; land ownership, use and nutrition; chemical industries and evidentiary contests; urban or rural settlements and mental health; transport infrastructures and infections; climate changes, disease distribution and healing…… we encourage applicants to follow their own interests, and, if in doubt about the fit, to contact Paul Wenzel Geissler (p.w.geissler@sai.uio.no).

This PhD will be jointly hosted by the University of Oslo as primary University, and the University of Aarhus as secondary University. It will be twinned with an equivalent PhD with the University of Aarhus as primary university and the University of Oslo as secondary. The two PhD students will collaborate and each spend one semester of six at their respective secondary university. (The twinned position at Århus University has been advertised separately.)

Funding opportunity for research on the Impact of Climate Change on Health - Medical Research Foundation

Deadline for application submission: 12:00 BST 19 September 2023

The Medical Research Foundation is delighted to announce that the second round of our Impact of Climate Change on Health funding scheme is now open for applications.

Collaborative applications are invited from pairs of mid-career researchers in countries of sub-Saharan Africa and the UK who are making the transition to research independence and seeking to progress in their field, and are working on the impact of climate change on health.

Projects should aim to develop a new collaboration or solidify an existing partnership between the two mid-career researchers, expanding their research networks and building their research profiles to develop emerging researchers in both countries. Research supported through these grants should be based in a sub-Saharan African context and should aim to increase understanding of the mechanisms underpinning, and processes involved, in the impact of climate change on infectious diseases and other non-infectious health outcomes that disproportionately affect tropical regions.

Applicants may apply for up to £300,000 over a maximum of a 3-year period. The Foundation has committed to making £4,000,000 available in this area.

Further details can be found on our website

Applicants should apply using our online grants management system

Visiting Research Fellowships 2023-2024

The Centre of African Studies, with generous assistance from the  A.G. Leventis Foundation and the Isaac Newton Trust, is pleased to announce two Visiting Research Fellowships to be held at the University of Cambridge.

Applications are invited for Visiting Research Fellowships to commence between 1 October and 1 December, 2023. The maximum duration of a Fellowship is six months and is non-renewable.

Fellows will have access, by agreement, to the holdings of Faculty and Departmental libraries, to the library of the Centre of African Studies and to the University Library.

Travel, visa, college accommodation, and maintenance costs will be paid by the Centre on behalf of the Fellow. The Centre is not able to provide additional sums for the travel and living expenses of anyone accompanying the Fellow to Cambridge. The sum is not subject to tax in the UK.

Applications are invited from candidates in all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants are expected to have completed a doctoral degree before the Fellowship start date. Preference will be given to candidates with a distinguished research profile commensurate with their academic rank. Early- to mid-career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply. For one of the fellowships, we especially invite applications with an orientation towards environmental themes, broadly defined, from any discipline in the social sciences, arts, or humanities. Offers are normally made to applicants who are based in African universities or research institutions. It is expected that applicants would come to Cambridge to work on a project that builds on existing research for which a period of residence in Cambridge is demonstrably appropriate. They should present a clear and feasible plan for preparing one or more pieces of work for publication. The initiation of a new research project will not be ruled out where there is a realistic expectation that it could be substantially advanced by the end of the tenure of the Fellowship.

Candidates are requested to submit a CV and research proposal in which they should describe what they will achieve during the Fellowship, how the resources of Cambridge will help them to achieve that, and how the Fellowship fits into their broader research agenda. Each document should not exceed 2 pages in length, and should be sent to vf@african.cam.ac.uk

The deadline is Friday 24 March 2023. Please note that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and does not discriminate according to race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

Request for proposals

Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC)

The Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) has opened a new Request for Proposals (RfP) for:

  • groups with disease-specific models of vaccine impact for malaria, COVID-19, meningitis A / multivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MMCV), hepatitis B
  • other cross-cutting groups that will add value to the Consortium, e.g. focusing on operational aspects, health economics, impact of climate on disease dynamics and geospatial aspects

They have now held a webinar, and a recording and presentation slides are available on request. They have also put an FAQ document on their website.

Next steps for groups applying to the RfP are:

  1. Read the Guide for Applicants and FAQ to check your eligibility.
  2. Register your group’s interest (full instructions in the guide). Groups are encouraged to register as early as possible, as you may need access to Montagu (VIMC’s delivery platform).
  3. Submit all application documents by 31 January 2023.

For information in other languages, please see here: Français/Português/Español. Please note that VIMC’s working language is English, and application forms must be completed in English.

Successful models will be invited to join the Consortium as full members and will receive core-funding of up to USD $73,000 or GBP £60,000 per year.

Applicants must be based in a university or other academic/research institution. Prior modelling experience is essential, and models must already be developed and in use. For some categories, applications are restricted to LMIC-based groups, with priority given to specific countries/regions.

The Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) was established in 2016, with a secretariat based at Imperial College London. They are now entering a new five-year phase, funded by the Gates Foundation, Gavi, and the Wellcome Trust. This phase will see a greater focus on modelling to address questions for vaccine policy and practice, working with a more diverse international community of modellers.

If you have any questions, please contactvimc@imperial.ac.uk.
