MUII Cambridge (2008 to 2020)
Infection and Immunity Research Training Programme (2008 - 2020)
In association with Cambridge University and the LSHTM, the five year MUII programme was initiated in 2008 using £3.2 million funding from the Wellcome Trust. MUII has been helping East Africans pursue research careers in Infection and Immunity, focussing on endemic diseases of the region. There is a huge infectious disease burden in sub-Saharan Africa, and a real shortage of highly trained East Africans available to tackle and help solve the problems faced in overcoming this challenge. MUII was therefore set up to help train local people to tackle local diseases.
Founded on a collaboration between Makerere University and the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), the programme works with regional research centres and leading international Universities to ensure excellence in collaborative training activities including short courses, research attachments and research fellowships. Opportunities for research experience range from secondary school to post-doctoral level and cover a wide range of projects, skills and expertise. Young people are introduced to excellent science through Open Days, undergraduate internships and Masters project attachments. A competitive scheme of PhD and post-doctoral fellowships also offers an attractive academic career path to high-calibre Ugandan and East African scientists.
MUII-plus
MUII (2008 - 2015) has been extended for a further five years (MUII-plus, 2016 - 2020) thanks to £4.7 million funding from Wellcome Trust and the UK Department for International Development under the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science Initiative (DELTAS Africa). MUII-plus is therefore continuing to help East African researchers pursue careers in infection and immunity focusing on endemic diseases, and aims to create a centre of excellence in this area.
To support a recently established Masters courses in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology and a Masters course in Bioinformatics initiated in 2019 both at Makerere University, a number of series of video-linked live seminars have been provided with seminars presented by a range of academics from across the University of Cambridge as well as the Babraham and Wellcome Sanger Institutes. Six seminar series have been held to date and a seventh will start in January 2020.
